The one light show

This time of year I for sure find myself in the studio more then I normally would the rest of the year (I wonder why) . But shooting in the studio can be lots of fun and gives me a chance to really think about my lighting and subject in a more focused way then I do on location when so many other aspects come in to play. Not too long back I had a shoot with Petra from Helsingborg, before the shoot I thought a bit about what kind of lighting I wanted to do for the shoot. Having worked with Petra before down in Malmö I was aware of her very natural look and style, I was able to use that experience to plan a bit better. I also took in to consideration the type of styling we would be using on Petra and decided to keep things simple. Very simple. One light is all I would use.

I find it very easy for us photographers to take things too far when it comes to the technique. I know I have found myself putting up way to many lights when only 1 or 2 would be the best. Just because you have the toys does not mean you should play with them all at the same time. In fact for those wanting to get in to studio photography I highly recommend starting off with only one light. It is all you need to get started and in fact I believe it can be a much better way to learn to handle light.
